Joseph Smith lived in the eastern United States at a time of great religious excitement. Many churches claimed to have the truth, and Joseph desired to know which one was right. Like many people, Joseph Smith also had questions about the salvation of his soul. He wanted to have his sins forgiven and to be clean before God. As he sought truth he read in the Bible,
“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him” (James 1:5).
Because of this passage, Joseph decided to ask God what he should do… This resulted in the First Vision!
