The 24th August is a Ukrainian state holiday celebrating the date in 1991 that Ukraine declared its independence. On Saturday 26th August 2023, the local Ukrainian community gathered at Redhill Park, Bournemouth to mark this special occasion.
“This annual event holds deep significance for the Ukrainian community, as it provides a heartfelt opportunity for individuals to come together and honour the memory of those who have passed away, while offering prayers for the courageous defenders of Ukraine. The centrepiece of the celebration will be a captivating concert presented by the talented Ukrainian school children, showcasing their dedication and cultural heritage. Beyond these poignant moments, a variety of engaging workshops has been arranged for both adults and children to enjoy. Participants will have the chance to explore Ukrainian arts, crafts, and cultural activities, fostering a deeper understanding of Ukrainian traditions. To enhance the festive atmosphere, delectable refreshments and drinks will be available for all attendees to savor. The Ukrainian community in Bournemouth extends an open invitation to all, welcoming the local community of Bournemouth, Christchurch, Poole, Southampton, Weymouth, Yeovil, and beyond to join in this joyous celebration. President Peter Cope, stake president of the Poole England Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was invited to give the opening prayer. The Ukrainian School have been using the Church’s Poole Stake Centre for classes on Saturdays and were recently gifted a portable keyboard by the Church which was used at this event.
Other guests included Tobias Ellwood MP and various Mayors from Dorset.
